Performance art is art in which the actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time constitute the work. It can happen anywhere, at any time, or for any length of time. Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body and a relationship between performer and audience.

Joseph Beuys
I Like America and America Likes Me
Joseph Beuys shared a gallery space with a wild coyote for 3 days. At times he lay on the straw, at times he watched the coyote as the coyote watched him and cautiously circled the man, or shredded the blanket to pieces, and at times he engaged in symbolic gestures, such as striking a large triangle or tossing his leather gloves to the animal; the performance continuously shifted between elements that were required by the realities of the situation, and elements that had purely symbolic character.

Yoko Ono
Cut Piece
Cut Piece had one destructive verb as its instruction: “Cut.” Ono executed the performance in Tokyo by walking on stage and casually kneeling on the floor in a draped garment. Audience members were requested to come on stage and begin cutting until she was naked.

Tehching Hsieh
One Year Performance (Time Clock Piece)
For one year between April 11, 1980 through April 11, 1981, Hsieh punched a time clock every hour on the hour. Each time he punched the clock, he took a single picture of himself, which together yield a 6 minute movie.

Janet Cardiff

In Real Time takes place in the library of the Carnegie Museum of Art and begins with the participant donning a pair of headphones attached to a small video camera. Participants are instructed to watch the screen and follow along for approximately 18 minutes. This piece relies on the discrepancies between what is seen on the video monitor and what is actually occurring in the library.

Meet this Sunday at the Khyber Centre for the Arts at 1588 Barrington St.(upstairs) at 11:00am. For directions see the Schedule and Location Map page on the right.

For this workshop we will be taking you (weather permitting) on a walk around the city. Along the way we will discuss and consider how public spaces are designed and used, how we move through the space, the aesthetics, sounds, and general feeling of each space. We will be working with sound and found objects to create a collaborative instillation.

Notes about images: The brussels carpet is made out of flowers and the spaceman is made out of coat hangers.

On July 4th we will be meeting at the Roberts Street Social Centre at 11:00am. You can find a map to Roberts Street here.

The group will split into two, half working in the Inkstorm Screenprinting Studio learning about Screenprinting and half will work upstairs in the Crowsnest space and in the Anchor Archive zine library learning about poster making techniques. These workshops will repeat on July 18th with the two groups switching workshops.
